Raymond Chappell

Raymond W. "Ray" Chappell, 84, of Cape Girardeau died Monday, Nov. 21, 2011, at the Missouri Veterans Home.

He was born Dec. 31, 1926, in Blodgett, Mo., to Edward and Pearly Huff Chappell. He and Vernetta Bradley were married Jan. 30, 1959, in San Jose, Calif.

Ray served in the Army for the Occupation Force in Germany during World War II. He worked as a truck driver transporting automobiles across the country with more than six million accident-free miles. Ray enjoyed working with cars.

Survivors include his wife, Vernetta, of Cape Girardeau; a son, Marvin Ray and wife Jill Chappell of Westland, Mich.; a sister, Billie Guard of Cape Girardeau; three grandchildren, Nathaniel, Andrew and Timothy Chappell, all of Westland. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, eight sisters and two grandchildren.

Friends may call from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday at Ford and Sons Mount Auburn Chapel in Cape Girardeau.

The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Friday at the chapel, with the Rev. Zack Strong and Judy Nilsen officiating.

Burial will follow at Missouri State Veterans Cemetery in Bloomfield.
