CAIRO, Ill. -- Patricia Lyman Winter of Cairo was born Feb. 25, 1927, at Clarksburg, West Virginia, to Richard and Mildred Lyman Parks. Pat transitioned from this world to eternal life Wednesday, Jan. 29, 2020, at Charleston Manor in Charleston, Missouri, at the age of 92.
In 1946, Pat married Robert Earl Layton, her first love and father of her two sons. He preceded her in death in 1983 after 37 years of marriage.
Pat later married William Winter, a great friend and husband. They made a great team as they worked to keep their church, Episcopal Church of the Redeemer in Cairo, active and growing.
William preceded her in death in 2007. Her son, Robert Rand Layton; sister, Jacqueline Moore; stepdaughter, Judi Childers; and parents also preceded her in death.
Pat leaves to cherish her memories a son and daughter-in-law, Tim and Linda Layton of Charleston; grandson and his wife, Scott and Meredith Layton, and great-grandsons, Bo and Tabb Layton, all of Knoxville, Tennessee; stepson and his wife, Bill and Mia Winter of Rosedale, California; stepgrandchildren; nephew, Brad Layton of St. Louis; niece, Kim Melton of St. Joseph, Missouri; and special friends, Jamie Hamilton, Yvonne Marbry, Nelda Jones and Elsie Baker.
A longtime secretary and bookkeeper, Pat worked at the Gaseous Diffusion Plant in Kevil, Kentucky, and later retired from Cairo Water Co. in Cairo.
Pat found time to serve her community as a member and president of Beta Sigma Phi sorority, Magnolia Manor board and her church, Episcopal Church of the Redeemer.
Visitation will be from 2 to 3 p.m. Saturday at Episcopal Church of the Redeemer, Sixth Street and Washington Avenue in Cairo.
Funeral will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at the church, with the Rev. James K. Muriuki officiating. Interment will follow in Green Lawn Memorial Gardens at Villa Ridge, Illinois, under the direction of McMikle Funeral Home of Charleston.
Pallbearers will be Dale Glenn, Roy Presson, Ray Presson, Steve McClanahan, Duke Jones and Brett Matthews.
