Oral F. Noon, 90, of Scott City passed away peacefully Sunday, June 22, 2014, at his home.
He was born Nov. 11, 1923, to Dora and Everett Martin of Davenport, Iowa. Due to the tough times of the 1930s Oral and two of his brothers were put in foster care to be retrieved later, but that time never came.
Oral was taken in as a foster child and later adopted by Frank and Edna Noon of Independence, Missouri. He was their only child.
After graduating Catholic school, Oral joined the CC Camp (Civilian Conservation Corps) at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri. After working at the CC Camp, World War II started and he enlisted in the Merchant Marine. During the war three ships were torpedoed and two ships were sunk that he was on. He was one of 15 who survived the last sinking.
He later met and married the love of his life, Julia Madeline Smith, on Feb. 17, 1944, at St. Mary's Church in Parsons, Kansas.
Together for nearly 30 years they owned and operated Modern Roofing and Sheet Metal Inc.
Oral and his dad, Frank, both enjoyed baseball and supported the Illmo-Scott City baseball program, especially the Babe Ruth Cubs. After his retirement Oral enjoyed fishing and gardening, but above all he enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren. Love and laughter were always his criteria for the day.
Oral is survived by four children, Pam (Jerry) Cummins, Judy (Alfred) Kurtz, Debby (John) Graff, all of Scott City, and Jim (Sally) Noon of Kelso, Missouri; a sister, Faye (Ray) O'Neill of Davenport; 19 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife; a son, Bill Noon; six brothers, Leo, Leon, James, Leroy, Estel and Paul Martin; a grandson, Kirk Cummins; a great-grandson, Conner Brashear; and a great-granddaughter, Alyssa Kurtz.
Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until time of service Wednesday at Amick-Burnett Chapel.
The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, with the Rev. Oliver Clavin officiating. Burial will be in Lightner Cemetery in Scott City with full military honors.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.
