PERRYVILLE, Mo. -- Norbert J. Schumer, 93, of Perryville, fortified with the sacraments of the Catholic Church, entered into eternal life Feb. 28, 2016, at Independence Care Center of Perry County in Perryville.

He was born Nov. 11, 1922, in Perry County, Missouri, son of Frank Schumer and Mary (Leible) Sauer Schumer. He and Alma Ann Unverferth were married June 24, 1944. She preceded him in death June 9, 2011. They were blessed with nine children, Miriam (Ken) Layton of Perryville, Sr. Carol Schumer, D.C. of St. Louis, Sharon (Bob) Moonier, Gary (Norma Christisen) Schumer, Cathy (Lynn) Peirick, Bob (Jackie Buerck) Schumer, Kenny (Diane Layton) Schumer and Dave (Kathy Wibbenmeyer) Schumer, all of Perryville, and Tom (Debbie Newell) Schumer of Cape Girardeau; 26 grandchildren; and 43 great-grandchildren. Other survivors include three sisters and one brother, Leola (Nester) Lappe of St. Louis and Dorothy (Donald) Barry, Leon (Ethel) Schumer and Rose Hotop, all of Perryville.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister-in-law, Marveline Schumer; one brother-in-law, Herb Hotop; four half-brothers; and five half-sisters.

Norbert was co-founder of Schumer Brothers. He was a member of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, Holy Name Society, Cursillo, Knights of Columbus Council #1263 and past Grand Knight, charter member 4th Degree Assembly #581 and past Faithful Navigator; American Legion Post 133 Booster member; charter member and past president of Perryville Development Corp.; Perryville Jaycees; Perryville Chamber of Commerce; and honorary member of St. Vincent High School Alumni Association.

He was a faithful, fun-loving husband, father, father-in-law, grandfather and great-grandfather, the rock and spiritual role model for his family. A card-playing, beer-drinking, tractor-driving fisherman and Cardinal fan, he was dearly admired, greatly respected, deeply loved and brought laughter to his relatives and friends.

Visitation will be held at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, with parish wake at 7 p.m., and from 6:30 to 11 a.m. Friday.

Funeral mass will be at 11 a.m. Friday, with the Rev. Jason Schumer presiding. Burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery.

Memorials are preferred to St. Vincent School Endowment, Vincentian Marian Youth, Cursillo, SEMO Catholic Campus Ministry, Birthright or Serenity Hospice.
