CHAFFEE, Mo. -- Dr. Nathan Hunter, 82, died Saturday, July 14, 2001. He was born Jan. 20, 1919, in Choctaw, Ark., son of J.O. and Maude L. Hunter. He and Margaret Lucille Kelly were married in 1940. She preceded him in death. Hunter graduated from high school at Bragg City, Mo. He received a bachelor's degree from Southeast Missouri State University, and a master's degree in health education from Washington University in St. Louis...

CHAFFEE, Mo. -- Dr. Nathan Hunter, 82, died Saturday, July 14, 2001.

He was born Jan. 20, 1919, in Choctaw, Ark., son of J.O. and Maude L. Hunter. He and Margaret Lucille Kelly were married in 1940. She preceded him in death.

Hunter graduated from high school at Bragg City, Mo. He received a bachelor's degree from Southeast Missouri State University, and a master's degree in health education from Washington University in St. Louis.

He had been a teacher at Chaffee High School, and then was assistant superintendent of schools in Alton, Ill. He was appointed state director of Health Education Safety, Driver Education, School of Nursing, and Civil Defense of all public schools in Illinois.

Hunter went to the University of Utah in 1961 as department chairman and professor, and served 17 years as dean of the College of Health. After retiring as dean, he continued to serve as a professor of health education and directed the graduate program.

He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II in the South Pacific.

Survivors include two sons, Michael Hunter of Salt Lake City, Utah, John Hunter of Malisfield, Texas; two daughters, Patty Slazak of St. George, Utah, Sue Vlamakis of Salt Lake City; two brothers, Clark Hunter of Versailles, Mo., Robert Hunter of Centralia, Mo.; five sisters, Bonnie Bess of Bloomfield, Mo., Jeannette McLaughlin of Bakersfield, Calif., Billie Hunt of Scott City, Mo., LaNora Shrum of Cape Girardeau, Josephine Dickneite of Centralia; nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a brother.

Funeral was held July 14 at St. Ambrose Catholic Church in Salt Lake City. Burial was in Mt. Calvary Cemetery at Salt Lake City.
