Mildred M. Melcher, 71, of Cape Girardeau died Thursday, Nov. 10, 2011, at Saint Francis Medical Center.

She was born Oct. 21, 1940, in Calvin, Okla., to John Franklin and Ruby Virginia Clemmons Sneed.

Mrs. Melcher had worked for Duschell Furniture and later for Drury Hotels in Cape Girardeau.

Her hobbies included oil painting, and her co-workers knew her as Ms. Independent.

Survivors include two sons, H. Jason Bennett of San Diego and John W. Bennett of Santa Rosa, Calif; a grandchild, Dejon A. Bennett; and a sister, Nina Allen of Ada, Okla.

She was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers and two sisters.

There will be no funeral services at this time.
