BROWNWOOD, Mo. -- John Michael "Mike" Young, 81, of Brownwood passed away Thursday, April 14, 2016, at the Veterans Home in Cape Girardeau. He was born Feb. 14, 1935, in El Reno, Oklahoma, the son of Charles Oliver and Dorothy May Pickens Young. Mike joined the U.S. Army on Feb. 5, 1954. He served in Korea and Japan as a marine engineer, obtaining the rank of SP3. He received a Good Conduct Medal. He was discharged Feb. 4, 1957...

BROWNWOOD, Mo. -- John Michael "Mike" Young, 81, of Brownwood passed away Thursday, April 14, 2016, at the Veterans Home in Cape Girardeau.

He was born Feb. 14, 1935, in El Reno, Oklahoma, the son of Charles Oliver and Dorothy May Pickens Young.

Mike joined the U.S. Army on Feb. 5, 1954. He served in Korea and Japan as a marine engineer, obtaining the rank of SP3. He received a Good Conduct Medal. He was discharged Feb. 4, 1957.

Throughout his life, Mike had several jobs: farming, highway department, shoe factory, construction, mechanic and his longest was working at MFA in Advance, Missouri, for over 30 years. He retired in 1999.

Mike was a lifetime member of the VFW and member of the Advance Eagles.

He was baptized in April 1947 in Red Rock, Oklahoma. His hobbies included woodworking, gardening and drinking beer.

Mike and Nora Lee Powers were united in marriage Aug. 30, 1958, at Chaffee, Missouri, and she survives of the home.

Along with his wife, he is survived by three daughters, Jennifer Lee Browder of Warner Robins, Georgia, Louesia May Hickey of Colorado Springs, Colorado, and Nora Jane Bollinger of Brownwood; 10 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sons, John M. Young Jr. and Charles Franklin Young; and five sisters.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Morgan Funeral Chapel in Advance.

The funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the chapel, with the Rev. Dale Wiseman officiating. Burial will be with full military rites at the Missouri State Veterans Cemetery in Bloomfield
