SIKESTON -- Max S. Harper, 85, of Blytheville, Ark., died Monday, June 8, 1998, at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Blytheville.

He was born Sept. 27, 1912, at Dexter, son of George R. and Hattie E. Harper. He and Aura H. Vaughn were married Oct. 30, 1955, at Sikeston.

Harper served 31 years in the military, including 20 years as a sergeant first class in the U.S. Army. He was a veteran of World War II, and was awarded six Bronze Stars and a Purple Heart. He was a member of the VFW Post at Blytheville. He was formerly of Sikeston.

Survivors include his wife; a stepdaughter, Arvilla Shaffar of Mt. Holly, N.J.; nine stepgrandchildren; and 18 great-stepgrandchildren.

He was preceded in death by three brothers and three sisters.

Friends may call at Nunnelee Funeral Chapel after noon Thursday.

Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at the chapel, with Dr. Jim Guffie officiating. Burial will be in Matthews Cemetery at Matthews.
