JACKSON -- Mattie May Hockenberry, 87, of Hazelwood died Friday, Oct. 18, 1996, at Village Northwoods Nursing Home in Bellefontaine. She was born Dec. 15, 1908, at Neelys Landing, daughter of Robert T. and Jessie McLaird Yancey. She first married Guy Hines Feb. 24, 1935. He died April 14, 1951. She later married Norman Hockenberry Oct. 19, 1953. He died Jan. 12, 1963...

JACKSON -- Mattie May Hockenberry, 87, of Hazelwood died Friday, Oct. 18, 1996, at Village Northwoods Nursing Home in Bellefontaine.

She was born Dec. 15, 1908, at Neelys Landing, daughter of Robert T. and Jessie McLaird Yancey. She first married Guy Hines Feb. 24, 1935. He died April 14, 1951. She later married Norman Hockenberry Oct. 19, 1953. He died Jan. 12, 1963.

Hockenberry taught at the former High Hill and Liberty grade schools in Cape Girardeau County. She owned and operated Neelys Landing General Store from 1935-57 and was postmaster at Neelys Landing from 1940-57. She was a cook on a towboat from 1965-75.

She moved to Hazelwood in 1989. Hockenberry was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Jackson.

Survivors include a daughter, Kathryn Long of St. Louis; a sister, Lillian Wolfenkoehler of Jackson; two brothers, Roy and Jack Yancey of Jackson; two stepdaughters, Norma ReShorte of Kettering, Ohio, Carol Irwin of Las Vegas, Nev.; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two brothers.

Friends may call at McCombs Funeral Home in Jackson from 4-8 p.m. today.

Funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Grant Gillard officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park in Cape Girardeau.
