BENTON, Mo. -- MaryAnn J. Scheffer, 96, of Benton died Wednesday, June 28, 2017, at Southeast Hospital in Cape Girardeau.
She was born May 22, 1921, in Benton to Victor and Pauline Welter Scherer. She married Benjamin John Scheffer on June 24, 1941, at St. Denis Catholic Church in Benton. He preceded her in death Nov. 11, 1976.
She was a farmer's wife, helping in management of the farm while raising eight children. The farm was in Stoddard County. They attended St. Joseph Catholic Church in Advance, Missouri. She moved from the family farm in 1979 to her hometown of Benton, and attended St. Denis Catholic Church. She has resided at the Monticello House in Jackson for the past six years.
She is survived by three sons, Ben (Mary Clegg) Scheffer of Festus, Missouri, Richard (Cheryl) Scheffer of Gordonville and Charles (LaDonna) Scheffer of Cape Girardeau; five daughters, Frances Dirnberger of Oran, Missouri, Marilyn Landewee and Teresa (Richard) Welter, both of Jackson, Mary Cotner of Cape Girardeau and Clara (Tom) Urhahn of Oran; a brother, Gregory (Georgia) Scherer of Benton; two sisters, Geneva Dirnberger of Benton and Wilma Martin (CA) of Advance; 26 grandchildren, Paul M. (Tammy) Dirnberger Jr., John (Susan) Dirnberger, Phillip (Denise) Dirnberger, Raymond Dirnberger, Alice (Roger) Berkbuegler, Sandy (Steve) Moore, Trina (Randy) Tankersley, Gail (Adam) Dubois, Cara (Dane) Bowman, Rodney (Tonya) Landewee, Deanne Pappageorge, Renee (Eric) Hinkebein, Linda (Ron) Ehler, Cindy (Jason) Bernsen, David (Becca) Scheffer, Rebekah (Benjamin Kirchner) Scheffer, Tammy Livingston, Chris (Lisa) Scheffer, Nicole Scheffer, Todd (Debbi) Scheffer, Kea Goodin, Kelli (Terry) James, Brian Hendrix, Keith Urhahn, Benjamin (Nikki) Urhahn and Daniel (Leah) Welter; 49 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-granddaughter.
She also was preceded in death by her parents; sons-in-law, Paul Dirnberger and Alvin Landewee; three brothers, Jordan Scherer, Jerome (Roselia) Scherer and Ralph (Ann) Scherer; a brother--in-law, Cornell Dirnberger; a granddaughter, Kim Hendrix: a grandson-in-law, Josh Goodin; and a great-great-granddaughter, Mia Brown-Santora.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at St. Denis Catholic Church. Parish prayers will be at 7 p.m.
Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the church, with the Rev. Michael Casteel as celebrant. Burial will be in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery in Advance.
