Mary O. Damitz, 106, of Cape Girardeau died Thursday, Dec. 6, 2018, at Chateau Girardeau Health Center.
She was born Oct. 5, 1912, in Corning, Arkansas, to John Curtis and Maude Oliver Black. She and Kenneth Damitz were married Nov. 1, 1936, at Mount Vernon, Illinois. In 1986, they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary.
She received a bachelor of science degree from University of Illinois.
She taught in Cape Girardeau Junior High and High Schools, retiring in 1976. She enjoyed traveling after retirement. Mary O. excelled in various kinds of needlework and was an avid reader.
She was a member of First Baptist Church in Cape Girardeau.
Survivors include her two daughters, Mary Katherine Damitz (John Dulkinys) of Wheaton, Illinois, and Virginia (Dwayne) Brees of Brookfield, Vermont; five grandchildren, William Kennard, Charles (Susie) Kennard, Andrew (Debra) Kennard, Jennifer (James) Brown and Curtis (Hollie) Brees; nine great-grandchildren, Sarah, Allyson, Olivia, Griffin, Grace, Evan, Ava, Ella and Aidan; five great-great-grandchildren, Madelyn, Seth, Sage, Kinsley and Skye; and several nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her longtime caregiver and friend, Edna Carter.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and three sisters, Barbara, Judy and Joanna.
Graveside committal service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 8, at Cape County Memorial Park in Cape Girardeau, with the Rev. Dr. Bruce Gentry officiating.
A celebration of Mary O.'s long and full life will be held at a later date.
