MOUND CITY, Ill. -- Mary Evelyn Lockard, 91, of Mound City passed away at 4:01 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 24, 2016, at Saint Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau.
Mary Evelyn was born June 28, 1924, at Wisetown, Illinois, the daughter of the late Rev. Henry Edward Lockard and Effie Manus Lockard.
Mary Evelyn was a member of Shiloh Baptist Church in Villa Ridge, Illinois, where she had served as a former Sunday school teacher and member of the Women's Missionary Union of the church.
She was a 70-year member of the Mound City Women's Club; a lifetime member of the Beta Sigma Phi Sorority and XI Delta Sorority; the Red Cross representative for Pulaski County, Illinois; and a member of the Young Republicans of Pulaski County. She was a member and president of the Mound City Library board. She was instrumental in the new addition to Mound City National Cemetery.
She was a legal secretary and a court reporter. She worked for Byron Connell as his legal secretary for over 35 years. She owned and operated Pulaski County Abstract and Title Co. in Mound City, and she did the title work for the Olmsted Lock and Dam. She was a member of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution. The community center in Mound City was named in her honor. May 3, 2008, was proclaimed Mary Evelyn Lockard Day by Mound City.
She was preceded in death by her parents, the Rev. Henry Edward Lockard and Effie Manus Lockard; her son, Kenneth Edward Lockard; a brother, Tilman McKinley Lockard, and his wife, Harriett Erwin Lockard; a sister, Dorothy Edna Lockard (James) Burke; and a dear friend of more than 50 years, Winniefred Stout.
Survivors include a nephew and wife, Wayne and Joanne Lockard of New Melle, Missouri; a niece, Marilyn Lockard of St. Louis; and many close friends.
Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Jones Funeral Home Villa Ridge and from 9 to 10 a.m. Saturday at Shiloh Baptist Church in Villa Ridge.
The funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the church, with the Rev. Larry Miller officiating. Interment will be in Anna City Cemetery in Anna, Illinois.
Expressions of sympathy may take the form of memorials to Shiloh Baptist Church in memory of Mary Evelyn Lockard.
