Mary Schumacher Asip, 89, of San Mateo, Calif., passed away Thursday, April 9, 2009, at home, holding the hand of her beloved husband of 60 plus years, after an 11-year battle with lymphoma.
Mary was born Sept. 3, 1919, in Mena, Ark., to John and Agnes Schumacher and was raised in Kelso, Mo., with her five brothers, who predeceased her. She married Joe Sullivan Asip in 1948 and lived in the Midwest until a 1956 promotion took them to New York, where they bought a house in Baldwin, raised their children and lived for 42 years. They moved to San Mateo in 1999 to ease her recovery.
Mary is survived by her husband, Joe; their children and spouses, Michael J. and Sharon Shuch Asip of Glen Cove, N.Y., Elizabeth Asip and David A. Evans of San Mateo; five of her grandchildren, Stephanie Asip Leavitt (Erik), Colin, Melissa and Emily Asip, Grant Evans; and their first great-grandchild, Ezra Asip Leavitt.
Mary was predeceased by a grandson, Brian Evans, who died tragically in Boston on Sept. 24, 2006.
Also surviving Mary are four sisters-in-law, Charlotte (Leonard) and Gladys (Jim) Schumacher, Virginia (Bill) and Else (Ed) Asip and numerous, much loved cousins, nieces, nephews, godchildren, great-nieces and nephews, etc.
She will be missed dearly by her family and all of her treasured friends.
Mary's Memorial Mass will be Saturday at St. Bartholomew's Church.
Schneider and Sullivan Funeral Home in San Mateo is in charge of arrangements.
