KENNETT, Mo. -- Margurette Holt McHaney, 91, of Kennett passed away Monday, Nov. 26, 2012.

Born on Nov. 16, 1921, in Centerville, Ark., she was the daughter of the late Aler and David Holt of Rector, Ark. On Aug. 21, 1942, she married the late James E. McHaney in Kennett.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her sister, June Lawson of Mayfield, Okla., and her in-laws, Lois and George McHaney of Kennett.

Survivors include one son, James E. McHaney Jr. of Roswell, Ga.; one daughter, Marsha M. Thompson and husband Ed of Cape Girardeau; four grandchildren, Dr. Kristi Baker and husband Keith of Greenfield; Dr. Christopher McHaney Thompson of Fairway, Kan.; Dr. Jon Mark Thompson of Clearwater, Fla.; and Lauren Thompson of Mission, Kan. She is also survived by two great- grandchildren, Kate and James Edward Baker of Greenfield, Ind.; a sister-in law and brother-in law, Bettie and Dr. C.R. Talbert Jr. of Cape Girardeau; and several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. McHaney was a member of the First Baptist Church in Kennett for 70 years and served as a Sunday school teacher, choir member, church hostess and most recently was in charge of the Homebound Member Visitation Program, which she greatly enjoyed. She enjoyed a deep love of music, which began at an early age when she sang with her father as her sister played the piano at Sunday afternoon church gospel conventions. During World War II, while her husband was overseas, she was employed by the U.S. Army and achieved the highest civil service rank. For many years, she and her husband owned McHaney Paint and Wallpaper Company in Kennett.

Visitation will be from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. today at McDaniel Funeral Home in Kennett.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. today at the funeral home, with Rev. Ed Jansson officiating. Burial will be in the Woodland Cemetery at Rector.

Pallbearers will be Dr. Christopher Thompson, Dr. Jon Mark Thompson, Lewis Talbert, John Tant, Marty Fowler and Joey Presley.

Honorary pallbearers will be Morris Raspberry, Bill Hook, Tommy Striegel, Dr. John McMullan, Ricky Dye and Terry Ross.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the First Baptist Church in Kennett or the March of Dimes.
