Mark Scherer, 87, of Cape Girardeau died Tuesday, July 1, 2014, at his home.

He was born Feb. 24, 1927, in Benton, Missouri, to John and Bertha Enderle Scherer. He and Maggie Jo Myers were married Sept. 15, 1956. She preceded him in death Dec. 8, 1989.

Mark served his country honorably in the United States Army during the Korean War.

He was a member of St. Vincent de Paul Parish. He enjoyed spending time outdoors, gardening and working in the yard. Mark spent time visiting with his neighbors and friends, especially the morning coffee crew at McDonald's.

Survivors include two daughters, Karen Murph (Don) of The Colony, Texas, and Susan Kelsay of Cape Girardeau; a son, Bill Scherer (Paula) of Kennett, Missouri; two granddaughters, Jessica Huseby (Tim) of Front Royal, Virginia, and Erin Kropp (Justin) of Little Elm, Texas; two grandsons, Marcus Scherer of Piggott, Arkansas, and Dylan Scherer of Belton, Missouri; a great-granddaughter, McKenzie Scherer of Piggott; two brothers, Vernon Scherer of Benton and Robert Scherer of Venice, Florida; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife; parents; two sisters, Druscilla Felter and Louise Burger; and three brothers, Paul, Harold and Raymond Scherer.

Visitation will be from 3 to 6 p.m. today at Crain Funeral Home. Parish prayers will be at 5 p.m.

Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Vincent's Parish, with the Rev. David Hulshof officiating. Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to Birthright, Humane Society of Southeast Missouri or the Society for Melanoma Research, and will be accepted at the funeral home.
