Malissa Mier

Malissa "Missy" Mier, 51, of Scott City let go of her pain Tuesday, Aug. 30, 2011, at home, with her husband by her side, after a courageous 15-year battle with cancer.

She was born Nov. 29, 1959, daughter of Carl and Janice King. She and Chris Mier were married July 10, 1999.

Missy was such an inspirational person to all who knew her. She was always smiling and never hesitated to give help to anyone who needed it. She loved spoiling her grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Her life was a testament to her strength, spunk and grace. Throughout everything she had to endure, she was always a lady. She will be dearly missed.

She was co-owner and operator of Executive Travel in St. Louis from 1988 to 1994. She received a bachelor's degree in education from Southeast Missouri State University in May 1999. She was a teacher at St. Denis Catholic School in Benton, Mo., from 1999 to 2004. She was a member of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church in Cape Girardeau.

Survivors include her husband, Chris; two stepdaughters, Niki (Jeff) Laubach and Julie (Jamey) Heisserer; and a stepson, Kevin Mier, all of Scott City; two granddaughters, Kyra and Arwen Laubach; a grandson, Kolin Heisserer; her father Carl King (Charlotte Thomas) of Scott City; two brothers, Gary King (Yvonne Parker) of Scott City, and Dennis (Lisa) King of Union, Mo.; four nieces, Amanda Camp and her children Liz and Isaiah, Loretta Schooley and her children Kya and Nick, and Audrey and Hannah King; and a nephew, Trevor King.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Janice King.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Amick-Burnett Funeral Chapel in Scott City. Parish prayers will be at 7.

Funeral Mass will be at 9 a.m. Saturday at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church in Cape Girardeau, with the Rev. David Hulshof as celebrant. Burial will be in Lightner Cemetery.
