L.W. "Bill" McDowell, 72, died Friday, May 1, 1998 at the Missouri Veterans Home in Cape Girardeau. He was born July 9, 1925 in Brownwood, Mo., the son of William and Molly Revelle McDowell. Mr. McDowell was in the U.S. Navy from 1943 to 1946, having served in the Pacific Theater at Guadalcanal during World War II. He was a Petty Officer at the time of his honorable discharge...

L.W. "Bill" McDowell, 72, died Friday, May 1, 1998 at the Missouri Veterans Home in Cape Girardeau. He was born July 9, 1925 in Brownwood, Mo., the son of William and Molly Revelle McDowell.

Mr. McDowell was in the U.S. Navy from 1943 to 1946, having served in the Pacific Theater at Guadalcanal during World War II. He was a Petty Officer at the time of his honorable discharge.

For 37 years, Mr. McDowell worked for the City of Cape Girardeau, retiring as the Director of Public Works. He had also worked as a projectionist for the Rialto, Esquire, Star-Vue Drive Inn, and Cape Drive Inn Theaters. He was a member of the Southeast Missouri Hospital Auxiliary, performing volunteer work there, as well as at the Veterans Home. He was a Past Master of St. Mark's Masonic Lodge and led many Masonic services for past members. He was also a member of the Shriners.

Mr. McDowell was a member of Lynwood Baptist Church. He was an avid fisherman and outdoorsman.

Surviving family includes his wife, Georgia A. Hampton McDowell, of Cape Girardeau; a son, Neal A. McDowell of Rochester, Illinois; a stepson, Stephen Hope of Jefferson City; City; a daughter, Linda C. Fenton of Indianapolis, Indiana; three brothers, Arthur McDowell of Cape Girardeau, Clayton McDowell of Owensville, and Harold McDowell of Tennessee; two sisters, Madge Kapfer of St. Louis and Doris Howard of Salina, Oklahoma; eight grandchildren and one great grandchild.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Charlotte A. McDowell in 1981, his wife, Theda Hope McDowell, and three sisters.

Friends may call Saturday, 4 to 8 P.M. at Ford & Sons Mt. Auburn Funeral Home, with Masonic services to be conducted at 7 p.m. Funeral service will be Sunday, 2:00 p.m. at the funeral home, with the Rev. Mark Anderson officiating. Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery. Graveside rites will be conducted by V.F.W. Post 3838.
