Lester Isaac "Rip" Sherfield, 85, of Cape Girardeau died Wednesday, Sept. 27, 2000, at Southeast Missouri Hospital.

He was born May 27, 1915, in Marked Tree, Ark., son of Van and Mollie Williams Sherfield. He and Charlotte Blattner were married Feb. 14, 1942, in San Luis Obispo, Calif.

Sherfield was a graduate of Scott City High School, attended Murray State University, and was a graduate of Southeast Missouri State University.

He played football and participated in track and field, including shot put and discus. He was All MIAA Conference in football two years. He played for college All Stars against Chicago Cardinals in 1938.

Sherfield worked for Missouri State Employment Office 17 years, and was manager of the Cape Girardeau office from 1970 until retiring in 1982.

He was a member of Evangelical United Church of Christ, Lions Club, and lifetime member of Veterans of Foreign Wars. He served in the U.S. Army from 1940-52, retiring as a major.

Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Judi Lyle of Cape Girardeau; a sister, Eva Magill of Atlanta, Ga.; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by three sisters.

Friends may call at Ford and Sons Mt. Auburn Chapel from 4-8 p.m. today.

Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Friday at the chapel, with the Revs. James Caughlan and David Schaffner officiating. Burial will be in Cape County Memorial Park.
