SIKESTON -- LeRoy Parmenter, 81, died Monday, Aug. 17, 1998, at his home after an extended illness.
He was born Aug. 10, 1917, at Bloomfield, son of Ellis and Lina Davis Parmenter. He and Patricia Glass were married May 22, 1943, at Bloomfield.
Parmenter had served as a corporal in the U.S. Army during World War II.
He was an assistant manager at Graber's Department Store from 1950 to 1968 and an assistant manager for Homestead Distributing Co. from 1969 to 1986.
He was honored by the Sikeston Chamber of Commerce as the 1998 Citizen of the Year, had been named Elk of the Year and Elk of the Decade as a member of Sikeston Elks Lodge 2319.
He also was a Scouting volunteer for many years and had received the Silver Beaver Award for 35 years of volunteer service with the Boy Scouts. He had received the Governor's award in 1993 for volunteer work during a flood.
Parmenter had been a member of the Sikeston Auxiliary Police and the Scott County Sheriff's Reserve from 1954 to 1976. He was a co-founder of the Stan Musial Little League and was named to the SEMO Baseball Hall of Fame in 1978. He also had served on he Sikeston Park Board and was a member of Murray Lane Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife; three sons, Sam Parmenter of Sikeston, Paul Parmenter of Wildwood and Joel Parmenter of Anchorage, Alaska; a daughter, Susan Friend of Sikeston; a brother, Denver Parmenter of Abilene, Texas; two sisters, Pansy McGhee of Puxico and Jean Ann Douglas of Poplar Bluff; nine grandchildren; and a great-grandson.
He was preceded in death by a brother and sister.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Nunnelee Funeral Chapel in Sikeston, with an Elks memorial service at 7:30.
Funeral will be Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. at the chapel, with the Rev. J.W. McGhee officiating. Burial will be in Garden of Memories Cemetery.
