FROHNA, Mo. -- Leo E. Steffens, 97, of Frohna died Monday, Jan. 15, 2018, at the Missouri Veterans Home in Cape Girardeau.
He was born Jan. 11, 1921, in Wittenberg, Missouri, son of Rudolf and Lydia (Pilz) Steffens. He and Nelda Weber were married on Nov. 3, 1948. She preceded him in death on Dec. 7, 1990. He later married Geraldine Fulton July 24, 1993. She preceded him in death on April 13, 2014.
Leo was a life-long resident of The Ridge. He was a farmer and a rural mail carrier. He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Altenburg, Missouri; American Legion Post 133, National Rural Letter Carriers Association, Square Dancing Club and the Senior Citizens Club. He loved to fish, cut firewood, travel and be around family. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran of World War II.
Survivors include a daughter, Linda (Don) Palisch of Altenburg; three sons, Vaughn (Colleen) Steffens, Randall (Emily) Steffens and Daniel Steffens, all of Frohna; two stepchildren, Curtis (Leann) Fulton and Bonnie (Mark) Bradfield, both of Sedgewickville, Missouri; a sister, Eileen Gerler of St. Charles, Missouri; two brothers, Raymond (Erna) Steffens of Union, Missouri, and Floyd Steffens of St. Louis; a sister-in-law, Thelma Steffens of Altenburg; eight grandchildren, Jennifer (Gabe) Soto of Cape Girardeau; Angela (Brad) Sutterer of Ballwin, Missouri; Brent (Rebecca) Palisch of Chesterfield, Missouri; Jessalyn (Aaron) Dippold of St. Louis; Tyler (Ashley) Steffens of Frohna; John (Sara) Steffens of Cape Girardeau; Bethany (Brandon) Davis of Jackson and Julia (Derek) Miesner of Frohna; 12 great-grandchildren, Macy (Carlos) Tulsie of St. Louis, Cody Hogard of Perryville, Missouri, Isabella Sutterer of Ballwin, Etienne Soto of Cape Girardeau, Skyler Soto of Cape Girardeau, Camdyn Soto of Cape Girardeau, Lillian Palisch of Chesterfield, Kellen Palisch of Chesterfield, Henry Dippold of St. Louis, Jane Dippold of St. Louis, Charlee Steffens of Frohna and Raelyn Miesner of Frohna, and two great-great-grandchildren, Cameron Taha of St. Louis and Shiloh Tulsie of St. Louis.
He was preceded in death by his parents; both wives; a daughter-in-law, Lori Steffens; a grandson, Zachary Steffens; a sister, Norma Schuessler, and four brothers, Willard, Herbert, Milton and Shirley.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Young and Sons East Perry Chapel in Altenburg and from 6:30 to 8:30 a.m. Friday. He will then be taken to Immanuel Lutheran Church in Altenburg for a 10 a.m. funeral service with the Rev. Frank Lucas officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery with military graveside rites provided by American Legion Post 133 and the Air Force Honors Team.
Memorials are preferred to Immanuel Lutheran Building or Parking Lot Fund.
