JONESBORO, Ill. -- Lela Newman Garner, 88, died Wednesday, Sept. 29, 1999, at Eden Village Care Center in Glen Carbon.
She was born Aug. 24, 1911, in Alto Pass, daughter of Otis and Nellie Champion Alger. She first married Claude A. Newman in 1928 in Edwardsville. He died in 1949. She and Audra "Red" Garner were married Aug. 20, 1955, in Jonesboro. He died April 23, 1997.
Garner was a licensed practical nurse at Union County Hospital, and retired from Anna State Hospital. She was a member of Lockard Chapel Baptist Church.
Survivors include a son, Gerald Newman of Glen Carbon; six daughters, Norma Smith of Glen Carbon, Shirley Mosby of Granite City, Nina Wright and Janice Bittle of Dongola, Charlene Sadler and Anita Stone of Jonesboro; two stepsons, Andrew "Sonny" and Roy Garner; four stepdaughters, Lorene Vincent, Freda Boyer, Nina Householder and Glenda Moore.
Also surviving are five sisters, Lindle DeWitt of Glen Carbon, Afton Bailey of DesPeres, Mo., Ruth Newman of Murphysboro, Minnie Wright of Herrin, Rosemary Schrader of Granite City; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a son, two stepsons, a brother, and two sisters.
Friends may call at Hileman and Parr Funeral Home in Jonesboro from 5-9 p.m. today.
Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home. The Rev. Gene Hart will officiate. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery.
