LaWanda L. Verhines, 87, of Cape Girardeau (affectionately known as "Nan Nan") died Thursday, July 22, 2010, at Ratliff Care Center in Cape Girardeau.
She was born Sept. 23, 1922, in Cape Girardeau County, to William and Minnie Niemier Kimmich.
She and Kenneth A. Verhines were married June 6, 1942, in Cape Girardeau. He died Oct. 9, 1996.
Mrs. Verhines was employed by Sears Roebuck and Co. in Cape Girardeau with customer service for more than 25 years, retiring in 1988.
Among her many joys were family and friends, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, spending time at the family cabin on the St. Francis River, traveling and her wonderful baking, which will be missed by many.
She was a member of St. Mark Lutheran Church and the Dorcas Circle. She was a past Girl Scout leader and an avid dog lover.
She is survived by one daughter, Jane (Gary) Davie of Cape Girardeau; two sons, Kent (Wanda) Verhines and Brad (Janet) Verhines, all of Cape Girardeau; nine grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren. Also surviving are three nieces, five nephews and her beloved dog, Coco.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, two sisters and a brother.
Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Ford and Sons Mount Auburn Chapel in Cape Girardeau.
Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the funeral home chapel, with the Rev. Nathan Burgell officiating.
Burial will follow at Cape County Memorial Park Cemetery in Cape Girardeau.
Memorial contributions may be given to the Alzheimer's Association or the Humane Society of Southeast Missouri.
