Larry Dean Burford, 73, of Scott City died Wednesday, Jan. 18, 2006, at Southeast Missouri Hospital in Cape Girardeau.
He was born March 31, 1932, in Cape Girardeau, son of Patrick and Loretta Francis Smith Burford. He and Lorene Ervin were married May 28, 1959, in Cape Girardeau.
Burford had been a construction worker with Labor Local 282 in Cape Girardeau. He played minor league baseball for the St. Louis Browns and also played with the Cape Capahas. He was a member of the 1960 Howard Jets Fast Pitch Softball State Champions.
He was a member of the Assembly of God Church in Scott City. He was a member of SEMO Horseshoe Association of which he was high point man in 1998, was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2000, and was winner of the Tournament of Champions in 2003.
Burford served in the U.S. Army.
Survivors include his wife; a son, Pat Burford of Scott City; a daughter, Linda Beard of Climax Springs, Mo.; a half brother, Harold Duckworth of Cape Girardeau; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a brother and two grandchildren.
Friends may call at Amick-Burnett Funeral Chapel in Scott City from 4 to 8 p.m. today, and at the Assembly of God Church from noon until time of service Saturday.
The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the church, with the Rev. Randy Morse officiating. Burial will be in Cape County Memorial Park Cemetery in Cape Girardeau.
