LaNelle R. Howell, 67, of Scott City passed away Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2008. She was affectionately known by most friends in Scott City as "Mom Howell."
LaNelle was born Oct. 9, 1940, to J.Y. Holmes and Esther Hilliker Holmes Moore. She and Carl D. Howell Sr. were married March 10, 1956.
Mom Howell previously worked as a cook at the former Henson's Cafe. She was a good cook and all the family loved her yeast rolls (which she learned to make from her mother-in-law).
Survivors include a daughter, LeAnna (Alan) Wright of Commerce, Mo.; two sons, James Howell and Don (Pam) Howell of Scott City; two daughters-in-law, Vicki Howell of Scott City and Clara Howell of Denver.
Other survivors are a brother, Larry (Helen) Holmes; two sisters, Leslie Lacey and LaVetra (Miles) Piper; a brother-in-law, Jim Bollinger, all of Scott City and a sister-in-law, Carol Holmes of Paducah, Ky.; 10 grandchildren, Adam (Jaime) Howell, Alisha (James) Hennecke, Brett, Josh, Jeremy, Julie, Donielle, Jessie and Carly Howell of Scott City, Stephanie Wright of Commerce; and four great-grandchildren, Destani and Trae Hennecke and Michaela and Xzander Howell.
LaNelle was preceded in death by her father; mother; stepfather, Vernon Moore; husband; two sons, Carl Jr. and Gary; a grandson, Cody Howell; three sisters, Harriett Holmes, Linda Pettit, Dianna Bollinger; a brother, James Holmes; and two brothers-in-law, Joe Pettit and Howard Lacey.
Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Amick-Burnett Funeral Chapel in Scott City.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the chapel, with the Rev. David Thompson officiating. Burial will be in Lightner Memorial Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to Southeast Hospice or St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
