HUNTSVILLE, Ala. -- Kenneth George Schnaare, 78, of Huntsville passed away Wednesday, Sept. 21, 2016, at Huntsville Hospital after a three-year battle with cancer. HUNTSVILLE, Ala. -- Kenneth George Schnaare, 78, of Huntsville passed away Wednesday, Sept. 21, 2016, at Huntsville Hospital after a three-year battle with cancer.

He was born Oct. 8, 1937, in Cairo, Illinois, to Werner and Josephine Holhubner Schnaare. He and Phyllis Seip were married June 11, 1960, in Thebes, Illinois.

Kenneth graduated from Grand Chain High School in Grand Chain, Illinois. He served in the U.S. Army, retiring in 1977. He was a member of the Lutheran church.

He is survived by his wife, Phyllis Schnaare, and daughter Lisa Clark of Huntsville; a brother, John Schnaare of Metropolis, Illinois; three sisters, Elsie Shaffer of Dongola, Illinois, Agnes Thurston of Pulaski, Illinois, and Margaret Thompson of Jefferson City, Missouri; four grandchildren, Kortni (Jeremy) Luther of Yorktown, Virginia, Zachary (Amy) Clark of Huntsville, Jordan (Tamarra) Clark of Clarksville, Tennessee, who is currently serving in Iraq, and Jarret Shepherd of Huntsville; three great-grandchildren, Jackson and Kinsleigh Luther and Jordan Taylor Clark Jr.; and nieces, nephews and other relatives.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his daughter, Johanna; and three sisters.

Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until the time of service Saturday at St. Luke's Lutheran Church in Olmsted, Illinois.

The funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at the church. Interment with full military honors and Masonic rites will be at the Masonic Cemetery in Grand Chain.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to the American Cancer Society.

Crain Funeral Home in Ullin, Illinois, is in charge of arrangements.
