Floral tribute is stolenTHANK YOU for giving me this opportunity to express how I feel. I just put a beautiful flower arrangement out on the grave of my little grandson. Every time I put flowers out at St. Marys Cemetery, theyve been stolen. I have called the police and offered a substantial reward for anybody caught stealing flowers from that cemetery. I think a very lowlife person does this type of thing. Its not that theyre stealing from the dead, but depriving those of us who love our ones who are gone and put some tribute out there for them. Please go buy your own flowers.Good qualificationsIM CALLING in regards to the letter that was in the paper about the upcoming Jackson election. I have to agree with Mr. Bowen on several things. I dont think were getting the quality of workmanship that we should be getting on our building and streets. I dont think our inspectors are knowledgeable about it. I think we need to spend a little more money on the worker instead of on so much supervision. I think that Mr. Bowens being an engineer would be a big help to serving on the Board of Aldermen. I also think that Mr. Harris, with his knowledge and expertise of the insurance and buildings from being a developer would also be a big help to the city of Jackson taking us into the year 2000.I want guaranteed rightI WANT to comment on Morley Swingles commentary. Evidently he has had the benefit of living in a city or around a city that has 24-hour, seven-day-a-week police protection. I live in Bollinger County, and there are times we can be an hour from police protection in our county. Dont deny the right to protect myself. I am a law-abiding citizen, and I think I have common sense enough to know when and if I need to use a firearm. I dont know that I could actually use it. I just want the right guaranteed under our Constitution to have the right to be able to bear a concealed weapon.Single-grade schoolsTHAT WAS an interesting letter to the editor about changing the school boundaries. There is a solution to this, and its a pretty simple solution. We just need to follow the example of Schultz where all the seventh-graders go to one school, all the seventh grade teachers are in one place and the curriculum is all there in one spot where we have a library that is set up for seventh-graders. We have a gymnasium thats appropriate for seventh-graders. We need that brought back down to the elementary school. We could have a school for sixth-graders, and everybody in the sixth grade would go to one school, and a school for fifth-graders, and everybody in fifth grade would go to one school. That way we wouldnt have to redraw the lines each year. Nobody could claim it was racially inspired or anything like that. I would think the school board and school administration would prefer not to have to argue about district lines. It would be a lot simpler for them.Rock n roll sells hereIM CALLING about the Elton John concert the other night in Carbondale. Amazing concert, just terrific, and I appreciated your review. As I was driving out of the parking lot, I noticed the number of cars with Missouri license plates. Why cant we do something like this at the Show Me Center? The head of the Show Me Center says rock n roll just doesnt sell. But I see in your review that David Ross and his family were there. He might realize rock n roll does sell in Southeast Missouri and Southern Illinois. Youve just got to get the right acts. I sure would like to see more in Cape Girardeau instead of having to drive to Carbondale or St. Louis to see a decent music performance.Setting the record straightIM PROUD of the person in Jackson who set the record straight to some of these big mouths who think they know everything when they dont know what they are talking about when it comes to city property. Thanks to the person who set them straight.Beware of tree-trimming scamPEOPLE, BEWARE. Recently I had a young man knock on my door and ask if I would be interested in having my trees in my front yard trimmed. I asked him to give me an estimate and eventually had the job done. I then gave his name to another individual who is considerably older and single, and thats when he took advantage of the situation. He did some of the work, asked to be paid, promising to come back the very next day. He has never come back to clean up the mess. He is a very persuasive young man, and it angers me that he would take advantage of someone who is so trustworthy and believes there is good in everyone.Protecting the governorI HAVE a comment to make concerning Proposition B. Gov. Carnahan and all his people are running around saying crime is going down in Missouri at a faster rate than the rest of the country, and, therefore, there is no need for Missourians to be able to carry concealed weapons for their own protection. If this is the case, why in this new budget does he request an additional $700,000 to be used to upgrade his personal bodyguard staff from two to 10? Doesnt seem to make a whole lot of sense to me.Coaches are at faultAFTER READING the article about the Minnesota players that were not allowed to play in their NCAA tournament game, I just wonder if theres anyone out there who agrees that the players seem to suffer the most. I know theyre caught up in a situation where they need to make the grades to play, but what about the coaches? Arent they responsible? How about putting the coach of the team on probation? It seems like everything is taken out on this young kid, and hes just kind of in the middle. The real crooks are the coaches of these programs. Does anyone have any character anymore?Running red lightsTHIS IS to the chief of police. Please put one of your empty patrol cars at the Lexington and Mount Auburn intersection to keep people from running red lights.Critic, not a composerALDERMAN CANDIDATE Chris Bowen raises good questions about the city of Jacksons land purchase. Let me ask another good question. Where was Chris when the city discussed this purchase? Chris only shows its far easier to be a critic than a composer.Power-hungry HillaryCLINTON IS running around wifeless these days even to his home -own of Hope, Ark. Hillary is distancing herself from Clinton thinking her chances for New York senator will be better if she doesnt have Clinton hanging from her neck. She wants to portray herself as a victim to gain sympathy, but that wont work as she was an abettor and an enabler to this adultery and supported his sick cause. Shes power hungry.Hope snow made you happyTHIS IS for all you people who wanted just one more big snow. I sure hope youre happy.Wine glasses for promIM A student at Cape Central High School. On March 11, I was informed by another student that at our prom on May 8 there will be no memory wine glasses. The administration and principal Randy Fiddler feel that the glasses promote alcohol. Students, upon finding out, got angry and signed a petition that will be sent to the school to be reviewed. My point is this: They are taking away a tradition. Jostens gave mugs they are really beer steins to seniors this year. If Jostens can give beer steins, then why cant we have wine glasses? You cant stop a student from drinking by taking away the glasses. They plan to replace the glasses with memory cardboard boxes, but its not the same. I feel and have always felt that the schools blow some things out of proportion. I feel and the Class of 1999 feels that Randy Fiddler needs to review this issue again. Thanks for snow removalI JUST want to thank the city street workers for a good job of cleaning out streets during this heavy snow.Potholes need attentionI CANNOT understand why the city does not raise the manhole at the corner of Mill and North Main Street. There are also chugholes all up through Main Street. And the levee on Chestnut Street and Big Bend Road is almost impassable for the broken concrete and chugholes. I wish the city would please, for the sake of our automobiles fix, these streets and these chugholes. This work on the levee needs to be done immediately because the concrete is breaking up terribly. As a user of this street every day, its hard to keep a car in alignment. We thank the city for any help it can give us on these chugholes and potholes in the north end of town.Delay, but dont cancelI HOPE the next Cape Girardeau school superintendent has the good sense to follow the example of Notre Dame Regional High School and Scott City and starts using snow delays instead of canceling classes. When we have snow on the ground, maybe we start school two hours late but still have school.Address those issuesTHIS IS in reference to the letter from Chris Bowen in the Southeast Missourian. Sounds like hes brought up some interesting questions, and I would like the Board of Aldermen and the mayor to address the issues he brought up.Use more bricks downtownTHIS IS in regard to the Suggestions for downtown comment. I think the bricks should be kept there. In fact, I think the regular sidewalks should be bricks with planters and more trees. And I think the outside of the buildings should be remodeled to be more like back in the days when it was quieter, more laid back, people more friendlier, more showier than they were. I think we should go back to the more older style and lots more bricks on the streets and the sidewalks.Plowed snow blocks drivewayWHY DOES the city, after a snow in a cul-de-sac, blade the snow piled up in front of your driveway where you cant even get out instead of putting it on the side where the circle area is?Might not be goodCONSIDERING ALL the problems Cape Girardeau is having with redistricting and the question of whether the district should go to neighborhood centers or not, Jackson points out the fact that maybe it has made the wrong move.Plowing crews appreciatedWELL ONCE again, while we slept warm and snug in our beds, we had a big snowfall. Never fear, the city of Jackson was out plowing and clearing our roads. Once again, thank you, guys. We really appreciate you.Tell the whole storyI WOULD like to make a comment about some public schools wanting to teach the children about safe sex. If theyre going to do it, dont do it halfway. Show what someone looks like who is dying of AIDS on his deathbed. Show them the sores. Show the girls what genital herpes looks like. Show them what cervical cancer looks like. Show them all the diseases. Just dont tell them its OK to have safe sex and nothings going to happen to you. AIDS isnt the only thing you can get.Shes distancing herselfHILLARY STOOD by her man through all his perversions and lies. Now let her stand by him all the way down to his complete degradation. But it looks like shes about to jump ship and play on her victims role for sympathy. Shes a manipulator and just as devious as Billy is. Shes now distancing herself for her own political reasons. What an exploitive character. She cant fool New Yorkers though. They are street-smart voters and will see through her.Is this a conflict?I FIND it very interesting that the only board member to speak out against eliminating the second preparation period for the teachers at the secondary level is married to a secondary teacher. Isnt this a conflict of interest. What rights?IVE SEEN many signs supporting Proposition B which state Dont give up your rights. I assume theyre referring to the Second Amendment. If the right to concealed carry is guaranteed by the Second Amendment, then we wouldnt need to vote on the issue, would we?University spendingIT BREAKS my heart to think the college is going to raise tuition. It seems they spend an awful lot more on their physical plant and soccer areas than into anything else.Lots of tuition increasesI HAVE a question for Dr. Dobbins of SEMO. My wife and I were having a discussion about when SEMO raises tuition. I thought it was on the even years. She thought it was twice a year. I was just curious.Something to brag aboutTHIS IS in regards to our legislators, be they Democrat or Republicans, who brag about getting all these different laws and regulations passed. The country would be much better off and Id be much more impressed if they would act and then brag about reducing the number of laws or regulations that we have in our government. The governments problem is not having too few laws or regulations, its having too many.
