CHARLESTON -- Funeral for Katherine Cates of Charleston will be held at 11 a.m. today at McMikle Funeral Home in Charleston. The Revs. Gerald Collier and Bert Ott will officiate. Burial will be in IOOF Cemetery.

Cates, 48, died Monday, July 12, 1999, at St. Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau.

She was born Sept. 5, 1950, in Blytheville, Ark., daughter of Larry F. and Bertie Barber Byrum. She and Don Cates were married Aug. 21, 1971.

Cates lived in Charleston most of her life. She had been a legal secretary for attorney Reginald Young, and the late James Haw.

She was a member of First Christian Church, Ladies Auxiliary to VFW Post 4294, and Order of Eastern Star Chapter 137.

Survivors include her husband; a daughter, Audra Stallings of Charleston; her mother, Bertie Staples of Charleston; and a sister, Karen Byrum of Cape Girardeau.

She was preceded in death by her father, a son, maternal grandparents, and paternal grandparents.
