Judge H.M. LaFont, 96, of Plainview, Texas, died Sunday, Nov. 16, 2003, at Covenant Hospital of Plainview. He was formerly of Cape Girardeau.
He was born July 1, 1907, in Conran, Mo. He and Jane Powell were married Nov. 11, 1937, in Plainview. She died Oct. 2, 1998.
LaFont was an attorney for Central Plains Hospital and Plainview Cemetery Association. He held the office of Hale County judge, was district attorney for the 64th Judicial District from 1943 to 1949, a member of the state legislature from 1949 to 1953, district judge of 64th Judicial District from 1957 to 1964, and a member of the Committee on Penal Code and Code of Criminal Procedure from 1960 to 1961.
He was a member of Kiwanis Club and was a 32nd Degree Mason.
Survivors include a son, Bill LaFont of Plainview; a daughter, Jennie Huie of Corpus Christi, Texas; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Friends may call at Bartley Funeral Home in Plainview from 6 to 7 p.m. today.
The funeral will be at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at First United Methodist Church in Plainview, with Dr. Max Browning officiating. Burial will be in Plainview Cemetery.
