J.T. Simms, formerly of Cape Girardeau, died Tuesday, Feb. 22, 2000, at Hunter Acres Caring Center in Sikeston. He was 81.
He was born Jan. 29, 1919, In Hornbeak, Tenn., the son of Augusta and Mary Upchurch Simms. He married Gladys Edgin May 7, 1939, at Ridgely, Tenn. She survives of Cape Girardeau.
He was of the United Pentecostal faith.
He was a self-employed painter and owned and operated Simms Painting and Drywall in Cape Girardeau for many years.
He also is survived by three sons, Charles W. Simms of Cape Girardeau, Stephen Simms of St. Louis and Daniel Simms of Commerce; a daughter, Sherry Harris of Cape Girardeau; 16 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by three brothers.
Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Thursday at Ford & Sons Mount Auburn Funeral Home.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Darrell E. Faire Sr. officiating.
Burial will be at Lorimier Cemetery.
