Joseph J. Halter, 87, died Monday, Jan. 22, 2018, at the Lutheran Home in Cape Girardeau.
He was born Nov. 20, 1930, in Uniontown, Missouri, to Benjamin and Clara Meyer Halter.
He was a member of St. Mary's Cathedral. He was also a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3838 and the American Legion Post 63 in Cape Girardeau.
He served 15 months in Korea in the U.S. Army during the Korean war.
He worked for the International Shoe Co., Procter & Gamble, and was a welder for 32 years in St. Louis. After retirement, he volunteered at Saint Francis Medical Center in the microfilm department for 16 years, posting over 14,000 hours of service.
Survivors include three brothers, Bernard Halter of Cape Girardeau, Hubert (special friend, Margie) Halter of Biehle, Missouri, and Flavian (Barbara) Halter of Poplar Bluff, Missouri; a sister, Mary (Junior) Schwepker-Klipfel of Benton, Missouri; and a number of nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Petronilla (Pate) Lappe and Marcella Kirn; and in-laws, Flavian Lappe, Edwin Kirn, Virginia Halter and Charles Schwepker Sr.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Ford and Sons Mount Auburn Funeral Home, with parish prayers at 7 p.m.
Funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Mary's Cathedral, with the Rev. Allan Saunders officiating. Burial will follow at St. Mary's Cemetery in Cape Girardeau.
