JACKSON -- Johnny L. Byrd, age 74, passed away Sunday, Feb. 20, 2000, at the Jackson Manor Nursing Home in Jackson. Friends may call today between 4-7 p.m. at McCombs Funeral Home in Jackson. An American Legion honor guard service will be held at 7 p.m. Funeral service will be Tuesday, Feb. 22 at 2 p.m. at McCombs, followed by interment in Russell Heights Cemetery in Jackson. JACKSON -- Johnny L. Byrd, age 74, passed away Sunday, Feb. 20, 2000, at the Jackson Manor Nursing Home in Jackson. Friends may call today between 4-7 p.m. at McCombs Funeral Home in Jackson. An American Legion honor guard service will be held at 7 p.m. Funeral service will be Tuesday, Feb. 22 at 2 p.m. at McCombs, followed by interment in Russell Heights Cemetery in Jackson. Janet Hopkins will officiate.

Mr. Byrd was born Sept. 18, 1925, at Oak Ridge, son of the late James R. and May Clippard Byrd. On May 21, 1944, he married the former Evelyn Seabaugh and she survives.

Other survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Mike and Margit Byrd of Jackson; two grandsons, Terry Byrd and his wife, Jennifer, of Jackson, and Michael Byrd of St. Louis; two great-grandsons, Kodi and Jake Byrd; and one brother, James Byrd of Pensacola, Fla.

Mr. Byrd was a lifetime member of the Oak Ridge United Methodist Church and had held various offices in the church. He was a veteran of World War II and had served in Siapan. He was a member of American Legion Post 158 in Jackson. For many years, he and Evelyn owned a Grade A dairy farm near Oak Ridge. In 1965, they moved to Jackson and he began working for the former Jackson Excavating Co. as a heavy equipment operator. He retired from Jackson Excavating in 1981. He also was a member of the Local 513 Engineers.

Expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to Oak Ridge United Methodist Church.
