ULLIN, Ill. -- John Matthew Rhude, 78, of Fairview Heights, Ill., died Thursday, Jan. 16, 2003, at St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Belleville, Ill. He was born Sept. 21, 1924, in the Ullin area, son of Israel and Ethel Irvin Rhude. He and Marian Brown were married Sept. 20, 1947...

ULLIN, Ill. -- John Matthew Rhude, 78, of Fairview Heights, Ill., died Thursday, Jan. 16, 2003, at St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Belleville, Ill.

He was born Sept. 21, 1924, in the Ullin area, son of Israel and Ethel Irvin Rhude. He and Marian Brown were married Sept. 20, 1947.

Rhude operated an auto body shop about 20 years, and then worked at Clinton Hills Golf Course 10 years.

He served in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Howard Rhude of McKees Rocks, Pa., Kenneth Rhude of Castaic, Calif.; two daughters, Michelle Bauer of Swansea, Ill., Lynette Staniford of St. Petersburg, Fla.; and four grandsons.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters.

The funeral was held Jan. 21 at First Baptist Church in Fairview Heights. The Revs. Wendell Garrison and Charles Westbrook officiated. Burial was in Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in St. Louis.

Lake View Funeral Home in Fairview Heights was in charge of arrangements.
