PERRYVILLE -- John Milton Abernathy, 85, of Perryville died Saturday, May 30, 1992 at his residence in Perryville.

He was born April 7, 1907 in Longtown, the son of R.V. and Nora Abernathy.

On July 21, 1928, he married the former Violet Mae Graves. She preceded him in death Nov. 20, 1986.

He is survived by two sons, Don Abernathy, Cape Girardeau, John Abernathy, Jackson; two daughters, Winnie Frentzel and Doris Slattery, both of Perryville; 14 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren.

One brother and two sisters preceded him in death.

He was a former juvenile officer of Perry County a former member of the Junior Chamber of Commerce member and the Chamber of Commerce, past president of Perryville Development Corp., and a past member of the park board, and the Perryville Board of Adjustment and was a Cub Scout master.

Abernathy served on the District 32 Board of Education for 15 years. He was a teacher in Perry County public schools for 14 years.

He was a manager of the Perryville Loan Company for 31 years.

Abernathy was a member of the United Methodist Church in Perryville where he was treasurer for 35 years. He was a member of the St. Mary's Masonic Lodge. where was treasurer for 20 years; he was a member of the Scottish Rite, a 32nd degree Mason and a Shriner.

He was a member of the Cape Shrine club, the Eastern Star, the Capaha Scottish Rite Club.

He was a charter member of the Perryville Lions Club, where served as secretary for 40 years. He was past governor of district 26D and had 49 years of perfect attendance at Lions Club meetings. He was a recipient of the Melvin Jones Fellow Award, which the highest award given to a Lion member.

He was also commanding officer of Perryville Civil Air Patrol.

Friends may call today after 4 p.m. at Young and Sons Chapel in Perryville. Eastern Star service will be held at 7:15 p.m. and Masonic service will be held at 7:30 p.m.

Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at the funeral home with the Rev. Jerry Statler officiating. Burial will follow in York Chapel Cemetery.
