John Lamont

AMES, Iowa -- John Lamont, 76, of Ames passed away Tuesday, Nov. 27, 2018, at Mayo Clinic Hospital in Rochester, Minnesota, following a short illness. Funeral Services were held Dec. 3, 2018, in Ames.

John Lamont was born March 7, 1942, the son of William E. and Thelma Smarr Lamont, in Cape Girardeau. Thelma and William Lamont were well known in Jackson as teachers at Jackson High School, and William served as principal there for many years.

John graduated in 1960 from Jackson High School. He received a Bachelor of Science in electrical engineering from the Missouri School of Mines (now the Missouri University of Science and Technology) and his Master of Science and doctorate from the University of Missouri, Columbia. It was on the Columbia campus he met Kathryn "Kitty" Mitchell, and they were married in June 1968. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary this past June.

John began his teaching career at the University of Missouri. He taught at the University of Southern California and The University of Texas. The last 20 years of his teaching career were in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department at Iowa State University. John retired in 2007 as professor emeritus. It was always his goal to prepare students for working in the real, practical world. John was known for his integrity, kindness and good humor. It was noted by his colleagues John was a gentleman and warm friend to students and faculty alike.

John and Kitty loved to travel, from Australia to Alaska to Europe.

He was preceded in death by his parents and son, Bill.

John is survived by his wife, Kathryn "Kitty" Lamont; a daughter, Kathryn (Ryan) Whaley of Rochester; and a granddaughter, Alexandra.
