JACKSON, Mo. -- John L. Gibbs, 69, of Jackson died Sunday, Aug. 27, 2000, at his home.
He was born Nov. 16, 1930, son of J.A. and Alma Eggimann Gibbs. He and Mamie Slinkard were married July 23, 1948. She survives.
He was a member of First Baptist Church of Jackson. Mr. Gibbs was formerly employed by Penzel Construction and was a member of the Teamsters Local 574 for 35 years. He was also a member of Excelsior Masonic Lodge 441 at Jackson, Sword of Bunker Hill and was a 32nd degree member of Scottish Rite. He was a previous member of the Jackson Board of Aldermen and was recently recognized for his volunteer work at the Missouri Veterans Home at Cape Girardeau. He served in the U.S. Army.
Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Kent and Jean Gibbs of Jackson; two daughters and sons-in-law, Pat and Billy Edwards of Chester, Ill., and Tracy and Phillip Thomas of Jackson; seven grandchildren, Jeff Edwards of St. Charles, Mo., Brandon Murphy of O'Fallon, Mo., Amanda Edwards of LaSalle, Ill., and Amy Brooks, Cole Thomas, Justin and Kalli Gibbs, all of Jackson; and three great-grandchildren, Alex Moore and Chance Brooks of Jackson, and Jake Edwards of O'Fallon.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter, Vickey Murphy, and a brother.
Funeral will be at 2 p.m. today at McCombs Funeral Chapel in Jackson, with the Rev. Dr. Brian Anderson officiating. Burial will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, Southeast Hospice or First Baptist Church of Jackson.
