ORAN, Mo. -- John Robert Gaines, 63, of Oran passed away Nov. 29, 2020, at Saint Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau. He was born Jan. 18, 1957, in Hayti, Missouri, to the late Robert Taylor and Emma Anna Eftink Gaines. He was a 1975 graduate of Notre Dame Regional High School in Cape Girardeau, a member of Guardian Angel Catholic Church, St. Joseph Men's Club and the Knights of Columbus Council 4311 of Oran. ORAN, Mo. -- John Robert Gaines, 63, of Oran passed away Nov. 29, 2020, at Saint Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau. He was born Jan. 18, 1957, in Hayti, Missouri, to the late Robert Taylor and Emma Anna Eftink Gaines.

He was a 1975 graduate of Notre Dame Regional High School in Cape Girardeau, a member of Guardian Angel Catholic Church, St. Joseph Men's Club and the Knights of Columbus Council 4311 of Oran. He was a lifetime farmer until his retirement in 2017.

He married Debbie Hinkebein at the St. Ambrose Catholic Church in Chaffee, Missouri, on May 29, 1982. She survives of the home.

Also surviving are one daughter, Sarah (Aaron) Young of Fulton, Missouri; one son: Derek (Darby) Gaines of Bald Knob, Arkansas; four sisters: Mary Ann (Ken) Sallman of Ramsey, Minnesota, Martha J. Hamm of Chaffee, Donna (Alan) Zeigler of Benton, Missouri, Betty (Larry) Essner of Benton; one brother: Andrew (Tammy) Gaines of Oran; three sister and brother-in-laws, Charlotte (Ron) Dirnberger of Chaffee, Frances (Mike) Horrell of St. Genevieve, Missouri, Georgia (Bob) Thiele of Leopold, Missouri; two brother and sister-in-laws: Ted (Debbie) Hinkebein of Florissant, Missouri, Charles (Glenda) Hinkebein of Chaffee; five Godchildren, Bill Hamm, Michael Zeigler, Janelle Panosian, Kelsey Bullinger, Craig Thiele; and several nieces and nephews.

Apart from his parents, John was preceded in death by one brother-in-law: Roger Hamm; and two Godchildren: John Wayne Hamm and Kenny Sallman.

Visitation will be today at Amick-Burnett Funeral Chapel in Oran starting with the Rosary at 4 p.m. and the Knights of Columbus service immediately following. Visitation will conclude at 8 p.m.

Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Guardian Angel Catholic Church in Oran with the Rev. Joseph Kelly officiating. Burial will follow in the Guardian Angel Catholic Cemetery in Oran. The family requests that masks be worn for both the visitation and funeral.

In-lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Guardian Angel Catholic Church (P.O. Box 158, Oran, MO 63771), Guardian Angel Catholic School (P.O. Box 188, Oran, MO 63771), or any charity of choice.
