DIEHLSTADT -- John William Carter, 67, of Diehlstadt died Thursday, Nov. 11, 1999, at East Prairie Nursing Center, following an extended illness.
He was born Dec. 21, 1931, in Arkansas, son of Elzy F. and Ethel M. Kilgoe Carter. He and Emma Lou Wilson were married Oct. 3, 1960.
Carter lived in East Prairie most of his life and attended Victory Baptist Church. He had lived in Diehlstadt the past two years.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, John Carter of Diehlstadt, Jeffrey Vinson of Benton; two daughters, Mary Carter of Charleston and Virgie Carter of East Prairie.
Also surviving are six brothers, James and Steven Carter of East Prairie, Junior Carter of Missouri, Charlie and Wesley Carter of Sikeston, Donald Carter of Arkansas; three sisters, Virgie Pettigrew of California, Geraldine Willis and Lucy Irby of East Prairie; 16 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by six grandchildren.
Graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday at East Prairie Memorial Park Cemetery. Burl Britt will officiate.
Shelby Funeral Home in East Prairie is in charge of arrangements.
