John Campbell

John Marvin Campbell, 93, of Cape Girardeau died Wednesday, Sept. 22, 2004, at Monticello House in Jackson.

He was born Sept. 26, 1910, in Jackson, son of John F. and Minnie W. Meyer Campbell. He and Elizabeth Friedrich were married Nov. 25, 1937. She died Feb. 17, 1967. He later married Mary Garner Richards Oct. 6, 1973.

Marvin graduated from Southeast Missouri State University in 1942 with a bachelor of arts degree in industrial arts and agriculture. He taught elementary school in Southeast Missouri for years. He was the first county public health officer in Cape Girardeau County, serving 37 years before retiring in 1985.

He was baptized and confirmed at Hanover Lutheran Church, transferring to Trinity Lutheran Church in 1952. He was an usher, active in the Men's Club, former Sunday school teacher and former president of the congregation, and active in other church and various civic organizations in the Cape Girardeau and Cape Girardeau County area. He was a member of SEMO Booster Club many years.

Survivors include his wife; a son and daughter-in-law, John Mark and Rebecca Campbell of Jackson; two daughters, Rachel Campbell of Elgin, Ill., Libby Roth of Chicago; a brother and sister-in-law, William and Ruth Campbell of Jackson; two sisters, Margaret Brinkopf of Cape Girar-deau, Veneta Willbrand of St. Charles, Mo.; five grandchildren, Damon (Amanda) Campbell, Brian Campbell, Wesley Campbell, Gennifer (Chris) Mays, Campbell Paige Roth; and eight great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Marie Harbinson.

Friends may call at McCombs Funeral Home in Cape Girar-deau from 4 to 8 p.m. today, and Saturday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church in Cape Girardeau.

The funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the church, with the Rev. Barry Pfanstiel officiating. Burial will be in Cape County Memorial Park.
