John Amelunke, 76, Vietnam veteran and beloved grandfather, passed away on June 17, 2024. Memorial visitation will be held on Aug. 31 at Christ Lutheran Church, Gordonville. Full military honors to follow.

John William Amelunke, 76, of Whitewater passed away Monday, June 17, 2024, at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis.

He was born Aug. 10, 1947, in Cape Girardeau, the son of Otto M. and Fay A. Nussbaum Amelunke.

John was a graduate of Oak Ridge High School. He was a veteran of Vietnam, having been inducted into the U.S. Army and honorably discharged Oct. 5, 1968.

He worked as a carpenter for many years and was a member of Carpenter’s Local No. 1770. He also was a member of American Legion Post No. 63 in Cape Girardeau.

John enjoyed hunting and fishing and being a grandfather. Family members will carry with them the memories of those adventures he shared with them. He was proud to be a veteran and most especially of being a grandfather.

Loving survivors include his children, John Eric (April) Amelunke of Oak Ridge, Barbara (George) Varner of Oklahoma City and Katie Amelunke of Chesterfield, Missouri; five grandchildren, Cole and Erica Amelunke of Oak Ridge, Bridget Varner and Maysie Amelunke-Varner of Oklahoma City and Maggie Poindexter of Chesterfield; and three siblings, Roger (Vicki) Amelunke, Jeanne (Curt) Wills and Steve Amelunke, all of Jackson.

Memorial visitation will be from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 31, at Christ Lutheran Church in Gordonville.

The Rev. Jacob May will conduct the funeral at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 31, at the church. Full military honors will follow.

Memorial contributions may be made in his memory to Lutheran Family and Children’s Services of Missouri or to Missouri Veterans Home.
