John G. Adney, 72, of Marion, Iowa, died Wednesday, May 19, 2010, at St. Luke's Hospital after a long illness.

A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Grace Episcopal Church in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Inurnment will be in Grace Episcopal columbarium.

Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home in Cedar Rapids is assisting with arrangements.

Survivors include his wife, Patricia; three sons, Matthew of Colorado Springs, Colo., Christopher of Chicago, Charles (Dawn) of Cedar Rapids; two daughters, Marla Adney of Omaha, Neb., Elizabeth Benn of Sun Prairie, Wis.; and a brother, Robert of Clinton.

Also eight grandchildren, Portia (Daniel), Jacob, Madeliene, Connor, Danielle, Charles, Toben, Greenlee; a great-grandchild, Aston; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

John was born Dec. 11, 1937, in Clinton, son of John and Edith Gohlmann Adney. He married Patricia L. Waters on Aug. 3, 1957, in Sterling, Ill.

He was city editor at the Southeast Missourian newspaper from 1971 to 1976. John owned and operated the North Iowa Times in McGregor, Iowa, and Four Rivers Senior Journal in Cedar Rapids. His titles in both papers were editor, reporter and publisher.

John was a member of Grace Episcopal Church, where he was a deacon 10 years. He was a published writer. He enjoyed gardening, photography, playing the organ and piano, and especially spending time with his beloved family.
