Johanna Emeline Schwartz, 89, of Scott City died Saturday, Oct. 20, 2007, at the Monticello House in Jackson.
She was born Jan. 16, 1918, in New Hamburg, Mo., daughter of Joseph William and Rose Margaret Wiedefeld Backfisch. She and John Edward Schwartz were married May 2, 1939, at New Hamburg. He preceded her in death Sept. 10, 1991.
She was a farmer's wife and housewife. She was a member of St. Augustine Catholic Church in Kelso, Mo., and St. Ann's Sodality.
Survivors include a son, John F. (Neisha) Schwartz of Cape Girardeau; two daughters, Shirley Ann (Edward) Beel of Cape Girardeau and Mary Jane (Bill) Spinks of St. Louis; two sisters, Bertha Glastetter of Kelso and Ann "Sis" Brockmeyer of St. Louis; eight grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; a grandson, Thomas Beel; four brothers, Joseph, Charles, Leon and Aloysius Backfisch; and two sisters, Christine Enderle and Clara Glastetter.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today, with parish prayers at 6:30 p.m. at Amick-Burnett Funeral Chapel in Scott City.
Funeral Mass will at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Augustine Catholic Church, with the Rev. Oliver Clavin officiating. Burial will be in St. Augustine Cemetery.
The family requests memorials to St. Augustine Church or Southeast Hospice.
