Joel Leonard Jones, 81, of Cape Girardeau died Wednesday, Aug. 8, 2007, at Southeast Missouri Hospital.
He was born Dec. 3, 1925, in Cape Girardeau, son of Raymond Monroe and Nellie Sara Baker Jones.
Jones served in the U.S. Navy from Feb. 23, 1943, to April 9, 1946. He was a veteran of World War II, participated in several major battles and was awarded four battle stars.
He had been an engineer in the river barge industry. He was a former Mason.
Survivors include two sons, David Jones of O'Fallon, Mo., Donald R. Jones of Oak Ridge; a daughter, Patricia Estes of Jackson; a brother, Robert Jones of Sedgewickville, Mo.; two sisters, Geraldine Middleton and Carolyn Hopper of Cape Girardeau; two grandchildren; and a great-grandson.
He was preceded in death by three brothers and a sister.
Graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Missouri State Veterans Cemetery in Bloomfield, with full military honors provided by VFW Post 3838 and Missouri Honors Team.
