SIKESTON, Mo. -- Joe D. "J.D." Sherrod, 79, of Sikeston, died Monday, Sept. 17, 2001, at his home.
He was born Aug. 25, 1922, near Hayti, Mo., to Dave Crockett and Rosalee Brodglin Sherrod. He married Virginia Eaton on Nov. 18, 1943, in Marion, Ark.
He served in the Civil Conservation Corps prior to World War II and was in the U.S. Army during the war. He was a retired postal worker, having worked 28 years with the U.S. Postal Service. He owned and operated Sherrod's Upholstery Shop for seven years.
Survivors include his wife; five sons, Joe D. Sherrod Jr. of Memphis, Tenn., Richard Sherrod of Millington, Tenn., Ronnie and Charles E. Sherrod of Sikeston, and Jay A. Sherrod of Centerton, Ark.; two daughters, Judy Hopkins of Humboldt, Tenn., and Susan Jolliff of Rogers, Ark.; a brother, Howard Sherrod of Detroit, Mich.; a sister, Dorothy Montgomery of Gladewater, Texas; 17 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, a sister and a grandson.
Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. today at Nunnelee Funeral Chapel in Sikeston.
Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the chapel, with the Rev. Ira Sanderfer officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery in Sikeston.
