Joan Weeks, 94, of Cape Girardeau died Sunday, Oct. 2, 2022, at Chateau Girardeau.
She died peacefully in her sleep and had lived independently until shortly before her death.
Joan was born in Kansas City, Missouri, and grew up in Minneapolis and Wichita, Kansas. She met her husband, G.R. "Bob" Weeks, M.D., when they were both students at the University of Kansas, and they married on Feb. 3, 1951. Joan was an elementary teacher while Bob was in medical school, and while raising three children, she ran Bob's business office until they both retired.
Joan was an excellent cook, and in her "empty nest" years, she entered many cooking competitions (and won several). She organized a community cookbook as a fundraiser for Cape Senior Center, and she donated the printing costs and dedicated the cookbook in Bob's honor. Joan was an avid knitter who won many ribbons for her knitting at local fairs. She made hundreds of "lapghans" and hats to donate to many groups over the years.
Survivors include three children, Melissa Weeks (John) Weaver of Marietta, Georgia, Rob Weeks of McClure, Illinois, and Drew (Shelby) Weeks of Marietta; and three grandchildren, Haley Weaver, Colton Weeks and Llewellyn Weeks Berg.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Hale and Hazel Manuel; sister, Janice Manuel Stewart; and husband, Bob Weeks.
Joan was a devoted volunteer and fundraiser for the Cape Senior Center, and the family requests donations to the Senior Center in Joan's memory, in lieu of flowers.
There will be a memorial service at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 15, at Ford and Sons Mount Auburn Funeral Home.
