Wallace, 72, died Monday, Oct. 25, 1999, at Baptist Memorial Medical Center in Memphis, Tenn.

He was born March 8, 1927, in Memphis, son of Fred and Dell Murray Wallace. He and Sandra Ann Webb were married Dec. 3, 1955, in Natchez, Miss.

Wallace attended school in Malden, and was a graduate of Battle Ground Academy in Franklin, Tenn., and Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tenn.

During the Jimmy Carter administration he served as the secretary of agriculture's representative on the Federal Farm Credit Board. He also served on the boards of Southeast Missouri Health Network and the Gideon School.

He was a member, elder and Sunday School teacher at First Presbyterian Church in Malden. He was a member of numerous civic clubs. Wallace was a U.S. Navy corpsman during World War II.Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Sarah Garner of Cape Girardeau, Rebecca Robinson of Dexter; two sons, Byron Wallace of Harlingen, Texas, James Wallace Jr. of Wimberley, Texas; and 10 grandchildren.
