James Houston Coates, 80, of Jackson passed away Sunday, Dec. 22, 2019, at Saint Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau.
He was born July 25, 1939, in Cincinnati, son of James O. and Shirley Jane Ripley Coates. He and Julie Nugent were married July 7, 1964, in Cincinnati. She passed away Sept. 11, 1999.
James, along with his wife and family, moved here from Cincinnati in 1973 with Procter & Gamble, where he remained until retirement in 1992. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Jackson and Jackson Elks Lodge No. 2652.
Loving survivors include three children, Dr. Joan R. Coates, D.V.M., of Columbia, Missouri, Jean Coates Lewis of St. Louis and James "Andy" (Tammy) Coates of Jackson; sister, Ginny Lee Barrett of Marana, Arizona; and sister-in-law, Joan Warner of Lambertville, New Jersey. Also surviving are three granddaughters, three grandsons, two great-grandsons and a best friend and companion, Betty Bishop of Jackson.
There will be no services at this time.
Memorials may take the form of contributions to First Presbyterian Church in Jackson, Jackson Elks Lodge No. 2652 or Altenthal-Joerns American Legion Post 158.
