CHARLESTON, S.C. -- Entered into eternal life Saturday, Sept. 18, 2004, Jacqueline Carol Harris Sample of Charleston, beloved wife of the recently deceased George David Sample.
Mrs. Sample was born in Richmond, Va., April 29, 1943, daughter of Bessie Chenault and Frederick Milner Harris Jr. Mrs. Sample earned a bachelor's degree in chemistry from Mary Washington College and a master's degree in management from Webster University. Upon graduation, she held a position with Mobile Research in Richmond, Va.
After moving to Charleston in 1966, Mrs. Sample taught chemistry at Trident Technical College at Charleston.
She began her 30-year career with the Navy as a chemist in the former Charleston Naval Shipyard, where she later became head of the Analytical and Applied Chemistry Branch. From 1985 until the time of her death, Mrs. Sample served as director of the Laboratory Quality and Accreditation Office for the Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA), at the Naval Weapons Station, Charleston.
In this capacity, she founded the NAVSEA Interlaboratory Program, which standardized quality control and accreditation for naval shipyard laboratories. She received many awards during her career, including the Department of Navy Meritorious Civilian Service Award and the Department of Defense (DOD) Citation for Meritorious Achievement.
Mrs. Sample served as chair of the DOD Environmental Data Quality Workgroup, DOD representative to the Intergovernmental Data Quality Task Force, the Board of Directors of the U.S. EPA National Environmental Laboratory Accreditation Program, the Executive committee of the International Laboratory Accreditation Cooperation, and the Laboratory Accreditation Council of the American Association for Laboratory Accreditation.
In addition to her many professional accomplishments, Mrs. Sample was a licensed pilot, a licensed Realtor and an avid xenophile.
Surviving are three daughters, Sandra S. Smith and husband Shawn of Fort Drum, N.Y., Alicia A. Baker-Sample and partner Deborah of Raleigh, N.C., Karen S. Grimball and husband Paul of Charleston, S.C.; a brother, Frederick M. Harris III of Fork Union, Va.; six grandchildren, Marissa Ann, Maria Camille, Meagan Emily, Shawn Patrick Smith II, Abigail Rose Baker-Sample and George David Grimball.
The relatives of Mr. and Mrs. Sample and their children invite everyone to attend the memorial service of the latter at 2 p.m. Wednesday at J. Henry Stuhr Funeral Home West Ashley Chapel in Charleston.
Friends may gather at the chapel Wednesday from 1 p.m. until time of service.
