ADVANCE, Mo. -- Jack Louis Hurt, 86, died Thursday, Sept. 7, 2017, at his home.
He was born Jan. 18, 1931, in Oklahoma City, the son of the late Thomas Edgar Hurt and Nancy Jane Hurt. Later, in 1935, T. Edgar Hurt married Pearl Davis, whose wonderful, loving care carved her the respect of all who knew her -- my Mom.
Jack was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Stephen and T. Edgar II; and sisters, Jaunita, Helen, Haleen and Phyliss.
He was united in marriage to Sarah Nell Munson on July 6, 1948. This union produced daughters Beverly Ann and Susan Lynn Hurt; five grandchildren, Jill Johnston, Jule Peukert, Jason, Jack and Anna Nash; and great-grandchildren, Summer Johnston, Benton Conner, Felix Peukert and Alexiana Nash.
Jack was active in school, class president for four years. He excelled in football and track. He boxed in the Golden Gloves for several years.
He was a Boy Scout, attaining the rank of Eagle. Later, he was a scoutmaster, a merit-badge counselor, neighborhood commissioner, unit commissioner and institutional representative.
Jack was of the Methodist faith and over the years served as a Sunday-school teacher and president of the Methodist Men and chaired the trustees, finance committee, pastor parish committee and evangelism committee. He was a certified lay speaker, conducting services in several churches from time to time.
He was employed by a construction and mining-equipment company, retiring as a vice president after 30 years of service. He was later an owner and officer of a company that sold and serviced construction, mining, oil and gas-drilling equipment.
In his younger years, he was an avid hunter and fisherman.
He served over the years as commander (major) of a 24-man reserve police unit. He also held a deputy sheriff commission. Jack also organized and commanded a rescue unit.
Graveside services will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at IOOF Cemetery in Charleston, Missouri. The Rev. Sue Welborn, pastor of the Methodist Church in Bell City, Missouri, will officiate.
