Betts, 57, died Monday, Feb. 3, 1997, at Heartland Care and Rehab Center.

He was born Nov. 30, 1939, in Brinkley, Ark., son of John H. Payne and Amanda Elizabeth Betts.

Betts was self-employed, and a member of New Bethel Church.

Survivors include five brothers, Jesse Betts of Niles, Mich., Harold, Terry, Robert and Chris Payne, all of Cape Girardeau; five sisters, Betty Davis and Ermalene "Jackie" Jenkins of Cape Girardeau, Maybelle Whitby of Brinkley, Doris Harris of St. Louis, and Joyce Payne of Atlanta, Ga.

He was preceded in death by his parents.
