Ivan Benton "I.B." McNew Sr., 92, formerly of Morehouse, Mo., and a resident of the Missouri Veterans Home in Cape Girardeau, died Friday, Nov. 7, 2008, at Saint Francis Medical Center.
He was born Aug. 7, 1916, at Naylor, Mo., son of William Benton and Rohena Bass McNew. He and Lydia Merriman were married May 6, 1935, at Neelyville, Mo., and she died Dec. 17, 1975. He and Doris Pemberton were married July 1, 1990, at Charleston, Mo., and she died Aug. 27, 1998.
McNew was a mechanic and owned McNew's Garage in Morehouse for 32 years, later owning McNew's Used Auto Sales in Sikeston, Mo., for 10 years. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in the 23rd Cavalry Division in Europe. McNew was a former mayor of Morehouse and a member of the Sikeston Eagles Club and the Kiwanis Club of Morehouse. He was a member of the Morehouse General Baptist Church.
Survivors include three daughters, Shirley Tate of Dexter, Mo., Audrey King of Morehouse, Phyllis Parker of Sikeston; a brother, Herman McNew of Sikeston; 11 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a son, a sister, three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Nunnelee Funeral Chapel.
Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Monday at the funeral chapel. The Rev. James Littles will officiate, with burial in Memorial Park Cemetery with military honors by the Missouri Military Funeral Honor Guard Unit.
